I'm COOP of the production team Baron Boys. The other member is Mult.i aka YM(http://www.myspace.com/ymbeatz). You can read his bio on his page.
What's the history of COOP?
I'm 16 and am originally from Orlando, Fl, but moved to Atlanta my freshman year in highschool. I started making beats when i was 12 years old in 7th grade. I didn't have any family influeces besides my older brother who played trumpet for the school band. I dont think he knows, but i use to take his trumpet and play whiles he was gone, so when he opened the spit valve it wasn't all him...hahaha. I just really enjoyed the music that was played on the radio, which is kind of weird because i hate what plays on the radio nowadays. I always had a thing for the instrumentals i heard. I wouldn't really remember the songs for the words, but for the melodies.
Now, to get more into the science of music, I'm taking music theory in my highschool. I'm also taking it to have a better understanding of the piano's keys. Hopefully i can learn to play the paino freestyle. And one more thing. I WANT TO GET A FEATURE IN SCRATCH MAGAZINE (shout out to all my scratch forum fam, holdin down the boards)
How did you get into the producing game? How long have you been producing?
Well I've been making beats since i was 12 years old in the 7th grade, like i stated. Now im 16, so thats 4 years. Between those times i've had hella time on my hands to craft my skills, so I'm progressing at a fast pace and constantly learning new things. I'm literally making beats everyday, and by the end of each week I have 15+ beats in my catalogue. With all the beats sitting there, i dish them out to some people for promotion, because they aint goin no where else. Why not?
I'm still waiting to find that signature style that will make everyone flock to my feet to buy. LOL. 'til then I'm making beats, and getting promoted by hella artists in the U.S. and Carribean.
Being from the ATL, you don?t have that typical ?CRUNK? sound that I?m used to hearing all over the radio. Your tracks are straight raw? and I love that. How would you describe your style? Straight loops? Chops? Keyboard work?
Oh I'm definitely into thet "CRUNK" sound your talking about. But, not all crunk is the same to me at all. Some is just flat-out looney and stupid. (YEAH IM HATIN!!! lol). I'm into the crunk that somebody like "T.I.", "Lil Waine", or "Young Jeezy" would rap to. You know that trappin'/hood type of crunk. Not the "snap your fingers" quiet club stuff. And I actually do produce that hood crunk music. I don't limit myself to one type of subgenre. I even produce R&B.
And as far as my style, all my sounds in my beats are played, not that there's anything wrong about sampling. Some people see sampling as unoriginal and steeling, HA. Fools can't see that it's just as productive and original as any other types of beats are. My partner YM is a smaple-based producer, although sometimes he may play out his sounds. And I don't, nor does he, have any specific signature style yet. I don't want anything that would be considered as coastal, or nothing to be catagorized by location. I have a thing for overly-dramatic beats. I mean with whaling-overdriven guitars, symphanic demoin or angelic chiors, hi-hats hittin with adrilanine, and crazy bass. I really like the big imagery type beats. Actually, i like alot of different things in beats, lemme just stop there.
What other producers have inspired you?
Well I'm just gonna list them, And this isn't in any order. (dont wanna get anyone mad)
Dr.Dre, Timbaland, J Dilla, Swizzy, Lil Jon, Dj Toomp, Needlz, Alchemist, Kanye West, JUST BLAZE, DJ Quick, Neptunes, Kwame aka K1 productions, 9th Wonder and theres more, more i say, MORE!!! lol
It's not like it was back in the days. Do you think sampling is dead? What's your opinion on sampled based beats versus keyboard beats?
No one is better is better than the other. My opinion doesn't matter in this massive web of music production. What ever anyone says, however anyone says, no matter what anyone says, people are going to continue doing what they do and believing what they believe in. But the difference between sampled beats and played beats is the change from one era to another. Sampling isn't dead and i dont think it'll die out. I'd like to believe that the way we produce will be recycled throught out the present and future. New ways of production will be thought up. I just hope it'll be an inclusion to how people already produce their music.
And also, the way people produce music isn't just affected by one factor. It's many things in the environment people grow up in, they circumstances they're in, the things they personally like, and mainly the new technology. I'm sure some genius will come up with some dumbness to make beats and piss off hella producers. It'll be something where existing producers can't just jump on the band wagon. I just think these "geniuses" need to slow down a bit and come up with some technology to improve our environment, instead of trying to make the way of life easier to the point where we wont have to physically move, and our need for our bodies will be unneccessary. LMAO...wow i went off topic a bit there huh... next
